Reveal a Common Misconception

This hook statement uses a common misconception that can surprise the reader and get their attention. Simply find a belief or idea that most people accept and then give contradictory evidence to that point.

Example

If you are writing an essay on how school uniforms should be banned, you could use this:

“Although many people believe parents are in favour of school uniforms, a 2021 American Parents magazine survey showed that 79% of parents actually voted against having a school uniform policy.” 

This will shock the reader of your essay and is a powerful way to bring possibly move them to your side of the issue.
