* in this essay example there are three arguments supporting the main claim but only the first body paragraph is shown

* the second body paragraph would expand on the argument of Santiago’s determination making him an ideal role model

* the third body paragraph would expand on the argument of Santiago’s bravery making him an ideal role model

Example

A role model is a person looked up to by others as an example to be imitated and inspired by. (Hook Sentence – Definition) Manolin, the young man in The Old Man and the Sea, is fortunate to be positively influenced by Santiago, the main character in the novella. (Bridge Sentence stating that the idea of a role model exists in the novella) Ernest Hemingway’s (who – author) 1951 (when) story reinvigorated his career (why) and follows a veteran fisherman, Santiago, (who – main character) from Cuba (where) who has been unable to catch a fish for 84 days. He is finally able to catch and kill a marlin but eventually loses the fish to ravenous sharks (what). Through his humbleness, determination, and bravery, it is clear that Santiago is an ideal role model, which is important because Santiago motivates Manolin to strive for his dreams. (Thesis Formula 1)

First, throughout the novella, Santiago consistently shows a high degree of humbleness in his exchanges with people and the natural world. (Topic Sentence) During a conversation about fishing, Manolin says that Santiago is the best fisherman but Santiago shows his humility by disagreeing with Manolin’s opinion. (Point – about being humble with people) On page 7 Manolin states,

“And the best fisherman is you.”

Santiago replies with, “No. I know others better.”

Manolin continues, “Qué va, there are many good fishermen and some great ones. But there is only you.” Santiago replies, “Thank you. You make me happy. I hope no fish will come along so great that he will prove us wrong.” (Proof from the novel that supports the Point)

Santiago shows his humility by disagreeing with Manolin’s evaluation. Santiago is only what he is, a man and a fisherman, and reveals to Manolin that humility is stronger than pride. (Explanation of how the Proof supports the Point) Santiago exhibits great humbleness in his interactions with people, and he grants much respect to the creatures he encounters which enables him to be an ideal role model to Manolin. (Concluding Sentence – restatement of the Topic Sentence)

Not having a worthwhile role model may result in a lack of inspiration and motivation, ensuring people not being able to push themselves to conquer life’s challenges and attain success. (restated Hook) Manolin, the young friend of Santiago in The Old Man and the Sea, is able to learn much about fishing, perseverance and overcoming obstacles with the mentoring and guidance of the savvy Santiago. (restated Bridge) Manolin learns vital life lessons from Santiago’s legacy created from his compelling life experiences and wealth of knowledge as a redeemed fisherman. (restated “So What”) Manolin’s pride in being a mentee to Santiago is conveyed through his great anticipation of the old fisherman’s counsel and Manolin will adopt this wisdom long after Santiago dies. (restated Main Claim) Although Santiago is extremely knowledgeable and an expert in his livelihood, he remains humble, determined and brave during the course of the novella. (restated Arguments) While becoming a positive role model is not always easy, Hemingway’s Santiago demonstrates that anyone can be a role model regardless of age, race or gender and provide inspiration to people around them. (Final Statement)
